33A Chapel Street - Heritage Open Day

This is a fabulous opportunity to visit the renovation of a traditional flooded property in Appleby as it is transformed into a warm, dry, flood resilient home.  Find out about lime and other materials and techniques used in making older properties warmer and weather resilient.

We're inviting you behind the scenes of our #ReadyForRain video diary to see for yourself the renovation of 33A Chapel Street, a traditional sandstone terraced property as it is transformed from a damp, cold building to a flood resilient and energy efficient home.  Making an older house warm and comfortable is different to dealing with a modern, cavity-wall building, whether it’s at risk of extreme weather like flooding or not. A high proportion of Cumbrians live in solid-wall, stone buildings that can be hard to heat and suffer from damp. Often, it’s because materials have been used in them that just don’t work well with these traditionally-built homes.

PLANNING YOUR VISIT

You don't have to choose a fixed slot. Just register for your free place and then drop in at the Tufton Arms Hotel at any point - although we'd suggest arriving before 2pm, as you should allow about an hour for your visit.

Your visit will include an introduction at the Tufton Arms, and we'll then allocate you a place on the next available house tour.

During your visit, you'll meet some of the people involved in the renovation project and the filming side of it, and you'll find out about the types of materials and building methods that are perfect for keeping older buildings warm and dry. Your tour around the house will be by Chris Morphet from Lake District Lime, who is carrying out most of the refurbishment works and who is also one of the owners of the house - ably assisted by Nettle the dog.

The Tufton Arms Hotel is in the centre of Appleby town. There is parking available in nearby public car parks and time-limited parking spaces.

33a Chapel Street is not wheelchair accessible.

Please wear suitable footwear and clothing!
