Climate and Carbon Literacy Training for Hospitality and Tourism (Full day split over 2 half-days)

The second part of this course will be held on Wednesday 8th May, 9.15AM - 1.15PM. You must attend both sessions to be eligible for certification.

Course Overview

CAfS are delighted to be delivering our 'Climate and Carbon Literacy for Hospitality and Tourism' course for Cumbria Tourism, as part of their visioning better movement project. The project seeks to work with partnerships in areas of Westmorland and Furness to design and implement long-term plans for better movement of visitors. These plans will also have a positive impact on residents and workers, enabling them to travel better.

To help build knowledge and inspire ambition for this project, Climate and Carbon Literacy training is being offered for FREE to those involved in the project, or living or operating in Hawkshead and West of Windermere, the Langdale Valley or the Ullswater Valley, thanks to the Westmorland and Furness Climate and Nature Fund . The training is online via Zoom and split over 2 half day sessions.

Bookings

Bookings for this event are being managed by Cumbria Tourism. Please head to the Cumbria Tourism events page to get yourself booked on if you are in in the specified areas and are interested in helping shape travel plans for your area.

Further details

Our inspiring, informative and interactive training course is accredited by the Carbon Literacy Project. It will take you concisely through the science of climate change, causes, impacts and solutions. It covers the global, UK and Cumbria picture, as well as highlighting what is happening locally, and how you can get involved.  The course presents you with a usable framework for understanding the climate emergency, how soon we need to act, the scale of that action, and what part individuals and organisations in Cumbria can play in the bigger picture.

You will leave this session more confident in your knowledge, better able to articulate what needs to be done, and with an increased sense of agency around your ability to be part of that change. You will also leave with the ability to begin to develop your own action plans, and to develop training sessions for others, if you wish to do so.

Delegates who complete the training course can become certified as 'Carbon Literate' after the course by submitting an evidence form. This involves pledging to carry out emission reduction actions as an individual and as part of a wider group, and is assessed by the Carbon Literacy Project as the awarding body. You will join a rapidly growing movement of 88,000+ certified Carbon Literate citizens worldwide.

The course is delivered by expert trainers from Cumbria Action for Sustainability (CAfS). We Co-Chair the Zero Carbon Cumbria Partnership and run Cumbria’s Climate and Carbon Literacy training programme. A certified Platinum Carbon Literate Organisation, our team of certified Carbon Literate trainers bring decades of practical emission-reduction expertise, in-depth knowledge of the local area as well as significant training experience

Coursework and Certification

In advance of attending part 1 of the accredited course, please watch ‘Climate Change: The Facts’ by David Attenborough (58 mins). This is available at:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=q9WyLPgyuqo  and  BBC iPlayer - Climate Change - The Facts .

Between part 1 and part 2, delegates will be required to spend a short amount of time on coursework (1 hour max) to calculate the impact they have on the climate using an online tool, to be discussed in part 2:

And to become certified as 'Carbon Literate', you will need to return your completed pledge document to us within 10 days of the course. Your trainer will introduce this document during part 2 of the training.

Zoom

Please familiarise yourself with using Zoom prior to attending. This course is interactive and you will need to be able to mute and unmute yourself, have discussions in breakout rooms and use the chat function and follow links by clicking or copying and pasting into your web browser. A laptop/computer or tablet will work better than a phone for this course and we recommend you download the Zoom app and test the meeting link prior to the session date. You will find comprehensive how to guides on the Zoom website. Please note, if you are booking multiple tickets each delegate will need their own screen/device to be able to participate in the course.
